Thrive built something good.
Before anything else, credit where it’s due. Thrive gave Leamington a proper coaching-led gym, ran it well for years, and built a community of people who valued small groups, real coaching and a room where the staff knew your name. Its closing is a genuine loss to the town and to everyone who trained there.
What we’re seeing on our side is people who trained there quietly working out what to do next. That’s who this is written for. If you’re reading this because you were a Thrive member, this is a coach’s honest attempt to help you land somewhere good.
What Thrive got right — and why that is what to look for.
The thing Thrive did well wasn’t any single class or coach. It was the model: coaching-led, small group, programmed. A qualified coach on the floor, cohorts small enough that they could actually see you, structured programming that progressed from week to week instead of a random workout every session.
That combination is what most people who trained there will miss. Not the specific pin-code on the door. Not the specific opening hours. The type of gym.
The right next gym for you probably won’t be identical to Thrive, but it should feel like the same species.
So when you’re looking, the questions to ask yourself are less about the facility and more about the model:
- Is every session coached in person by a qualified coach, or is it self-led with occasional check-ins?
- Are cohorts genuinely small (under ten, ideally under eight), or is “small group” loosely 15-20 people?
- Is the programming written for you, or are you following a generic class script?
- Does the coach track your form and progression, or are you just another person in the room?
- Does the room feel like the same species of gym you left?
The coaching-led options in Leamington.
There’s no single “replacement for Thrive.” What there is, is a handful of small independent gyms in and around Leamington running variants of the coaching-led model. Broadly they fall into three shapes:
Coaching-led small group PT. The closest match to what Thrive did. Programmed strength and conditioning in cohorts capped at 8, every session led by a coach. This is what we run at Physical Formula. There are one or two other independent studios in the area with a broadly similar approach, though structure and cohort sizes differ — worth visiting to compare.
CrossFit-style community boxes. A different flavour: everyone in the room doing the same workout, coach-led, high intensity, strong community culture. Great for some people, not for others. There are a couple of these locally.
One-to-one personal training. A step up in cost per session but a step down in group energy. Most PTs in Leamington will work out of one of the commercial gyms rather than have their own space. Different feel to what Thrive gave you.
For a longer breakdown of the different types of gym in Leamington and what each one is best for, we wrote a full coach’s guide to choosing a gym here.
Where Physical Formula fits, honestly.
We’re a coaching-led small group personal training gym in Leamington. Every session is coached in person, cohorts are capped at eight, programming is written and scaled to the individual. We’ve been running since 2020 and have around 100 active members.
That’s similar to what Thrive did in a lot of important ways, but it isn’t Thrive. Different room, different coaches, different community, different specific approach. The best way to know whether it’s the right home for you is to come and see.
We’re opening the doors this weekend. Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th August. Come by any time, meet the coaches, see the space. No booking, no pressure.
Full details on the Open Day page. Sat 9am-2pm, Sun 9am-1pm, at Unit 7E Rigby Close, Leamington Spa (CV34 6TH). Free parking on the door.
What to do this week.
Practical, in order:
- Give yourself two weeks to decide. Don’t sign anywhere in the first 72 hours of stress-searching. You’ll regret it.
- Visit 2-3 places. Not just one. You need something to compare to. Every gym looks fine from a website; the room tells you the truth.
- Ask about a taster block, not a free trial. A single free session tells you almost nothing. Anyone can smile for one visit. A paid two- or four-week block will tell you what a normal training week actually feels like there.
- Trust the room, not the marketing. How the members interact with each other and with staff on a normal Tuesday is the most reliable signal you’ll get.
- If you had prepaid sessions or a block still to run at Thrive, sort that out separately before committing to a monthly payment somewhere new.
Come and have a look.
Regardless of whether Physical Formula ends up being your next gym, we’d rather you found the right home for your training than the closest one. If we’re not it, we’ll happily point you to who might be. That’s the point of Open Day this weekend. Have a look, ask the questions, decide when you’re ready.
